Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey into the world of the Korean language? Learning Korean opens up a wealth of cultural experiences, friendships, and personal growth. In this post, we’ll explore some effective ways to practice Korean that will help you progress steadily and enjoyably. So, grab your notebook and let’s get started!
Getting started with Korean
- Embrace the Basics: Like any language, Korean has its own unique sounds, characters, and grammar rules. Start by immersing yourself in the basics. Learn the Korean alphabet, known as Hangul, as it forms the foundation of the language. Practice reading and writing Hangul to become comfortable with the characters and their pronunciation. A tip I have for practicing the writing system is to start writing entire words as soon as possible. I found that this helped me to both learn new vocabulary and understand batchim rules (you can Google batchim for more info!). It’s tedious and repetitive to spend too much time writing out single characters, so as soon as you feel comfortable, start writing out basic words. You can find basic words from a word list online, an app like Drops, or a great textbook like Talk To Me in Korean, My First 500 Words, or Korean Grammar in Use.
- Listen, Repeat, and Imitate: Improving your Korean pronunciation and speaking skills begins with active listening. Seek out authentic Korean content such as K-dramas, podcasts, radio shows and YouTube videos. An app I really enjoy and wrote a review about is Naver’s Audioclip. There are podcasts specific to learning Korean on there! Pay attention to the pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm of the language. Repeat phrases and sentences out loud, imitating native speakers as closely as possible. This will help you develop an authentic Korean accent and enhance your conversational abilities.
Need some Korean resource recommendations? Check out my list here! - Engage in Conversations: Don’t hesitate to engage in conversations as soon as you feel ready. Join language exchange groups or find language partners who are native Korean speakers. I used Meetup to find exchange groups before covid. Language learning apps like HiNative, Hilokal and HelloTalk provide opportunities to connect with native Korean speakers and practice your conversational skills. You can also find listening/speaking rooms on the app Tandem. Don’t worry about making mistakes; it’s all part of the learning process. Native speakers will appreciate your effort, and you’ll gain valuable insights into Korean culture along the way.
How to immerse and integrate Korean into your life

- Immerse Yourself: Immerse yourself in the Korean language and culture to accelerate your learning. Surround yourself with Korean media such as movies, TV shows, and music. Watch Korean YouTube channels, listen to Korean podcasts, and read Korean books or online articles. I recently started a Korean-language only YouTube channel which you can check out here! By exposing yourself to different forms of media, you’ll become familiar with idiomatic expressions, cultural references, and everyday vocabulary. Create a language-rich environment by labeling items around your home with their Korean names and practicing Korean in your daily activities.
- Social Media and Slang: Additionally, consider following Korean social media accounts or joining online communities related to your interests. Engaging with content created by native Korean speakers allows you to witness the language in its authentic form and stay up-to-date with trending topics and expressions. Korean slang is always changing and you can fall out of date if you’re using old slang that you learned ages ago. I learned a lot of slang and unique expressions from Twitter, YouTube videos, and speaking to Korean friends. This exposure to real-life language usage will supplement your formal learning and make your Korean skills more dynamic!
- Keep a Language Journal: Maintaining a language journal can be a valuable tool to track your progress and reinforce what you’ve learned. Write down new vocabulary, grammar rules, and sentence structures you encounter. Practice using them in your own sentences and paragraphs. Additionally, jotting down your thoughts, feelings, and observations in Korean will help you develop your writing skills and expand your vocabulary organically. Here’s a video about my language journal!
- Integrate Korean into Your Daily Routine: To truly immerse yourself in the Korean language, try incorporating it into your daily activities. Change the language settings on your phone, computer, and social media accounts to Korean. This will expose you to Korean vocabulary and phrases regularly and help familiarize you with common tech-related terms. Whenever you come across a new word or phrase, make a conscious effort to understand its meaning and usage. Consider writing a diary or journal entries in Korean. Start with simple sentences and gradually expand your vocabulary and grammatical structures as you progress. Writing in Korean not only helps reinforce what you’ve learned but also allows you to express your thoughts and emotions in the language, fostering a deeper connection with the language and culture.
- When making a shopping list or organizing your daily to-do’s, try writing them in Korean. Challenge yourself to think in Korean as you plan your tasks and activities. You can also practice speaking Korean while cooking by narrating the steps out loud or describing the ingredients and flavors. These small adjustments to your daily routine will keep you engaged with the language and provide practical applications for your skills.
